Andrew, the owner and operator of Smiths Training Services, has been a dedicated professional in the Australian transport industry for more than forty years. Dangerous Goods Licensing


What is the purpose of this course?


This dangerous goods licence course in Melbourne is a mandatory step in applying for a dangerous goods driver licence and has been endorsed by all jurisdictions. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to apply to their State Authority for a dangerous goods driver licence, which is renewable every three years. The course comprehensively covers all aspects of the ADG Code alongside relevant legislation, including classification, marking, documentation, stowage and load restraint, segregation and compatibility, as well as the responsibilities of individuals involved.


Who is this course for?


This course is designed for individuals who wish to obtain a dangerous goods driver licence, whether required by law or for professional reasons.


Do you need a licence?


A dangerous goods driver licence is necessary for transporting dangerous goods in certain cases, including:

- In a receptacle with a capacity of more than 500L

- If there is over 500kg in a single receptacle

- For intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), where the total capacity of all IBCs exceeds 3000L or when any IBC is filled or emptied while on the vehicle.


How long does the course take?


The duration of this dangerous goods licence course is two days (16 hours), comprising two 8-hour days. This is a mandatory and national requirement established by the Dangerous Goods Competent Authorities Panel (CAP).


What qualification do I get?


Successful participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0001 Licence to transport dangerous goods by road. This certification is issued through our partnering RTO, Harness Energy, which is a national provider (RTO number 40521).


How much does the course cost?


The full cost of the course is $485.00* and includes a trainee workbook, DG compatibility chart, meals, and refreshments. *Please note that this price does not include the licensing fee charged by the relevant State Licensing Authority.


Note: Smiths Training Services is NOT a registered training organisation (RTO) and utilizes Harness Energy for this course. Additionally, we offer a convenient SLP course online for those who prefer remote learning options, which also leads to obtaining an SLP license.

    TLILIC0001 Licence to Transport Dangerous Goods by Road

    $485 per person

    This is a 16-hour dangerous goods licence course in Melbourne, conducted over 2 days as mandated by the competent authorities panel. Our course is delivered face to face, and you will receive comprehensive training materials. While attending our facility, all meals and refreshments are provided at no extra cost. For this course, we use Harness Energy, a nationally recognised provider # 40521, to issue your nationally recognised statement of attainment. If you prefer flexibility, we also offer an SLP course online, making it easier for you to obtain your SLP license.

    SLP (Safe Load Program)

    $400 per person

    If you are considering a career in the fuel industry as a bulk fuel tanker driver, you will need to complete an SLP course to gain access to major fuel terminals. We offer a discount on the SLP course when you enroll in our dangerous goods licence course in Melbourne. Starting December 1, 2024, the new price for the SLP course will be $400.00, not including the cost of your SLP Driver ID card. The administrators of the SLP course have significantly raised their fees for trainers, and unfortunately, you will also need to pay an additional $200.00 for your SLP license, which includes the ID card.

    TLID0018 Prepare for Transport of Dangerous Goods

    $375 per person

    This is a one-day course, which is non-licensing and designed to equip you with essential knowledge about documentation, placarding of vehicles, compatibility, segregation, and more. We utilize Vertical Horizonz, a nationally recognized RTO (provider # 31160), to provide you with a nationally recognized statement of attainment upon completion. If you're interested in pursuing a dangerous goods licence course in Melbourne, our slp course is an excellent option. Additionally, we offer an slp course online for added convenience, allowing you to earn your slp license from anywhere.


    TLID0021 Store and Handle Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances

    $375 per person

    This is a one day course that does not require a dangerous goods licence. During the course, you will cover essential topics like documentation, vehicle placarding, warehouse compatibility, segregation, the GHS, and SDSs. We provide this training through Vertical Horizonz, a nationally recognised RTO (provider # 31160), which will also issue you a nationally recognised statement of attainment upon completion. Additionally, for those interested, we offer an SLP course online, which is an excellent option if you're looking to obtain your SLP license.
